MIC Cairo


Materia is opening a material inspiration centre in Egypt. Barcah Gruppo has established their company Design & Build in Cairo with a concept that goes beyond a standard furniture shop (3000 m2), they have created a genuine point of interest for the whole design community, where art exhibitions and art galleries will be held regularly. By late 2010 Design & Build will be operating in Egypt and later in the UAE.


Bella Centre Code10


From 26-29 August Materia will present 600 materials for the CODE10 exhibition at the Bella Center, Copenhagen. The gallery of materials at the Center will be continued once CODE10 has finished.  Powered by Materia this exposition will be frequently updated with new materials.

Victoria State of Design


Materia showed a special exhibition of 300 material samples in the historical Exhibition building during the Victoria's State of Design festival in Melbourne. Topic of this exhibition was; Inspiring sustainable materials, with renewable specials, recycled materials, examples of how designers create new materials from old sources and some extra interactive materials.

Material of the month


Modulari screens are made from custom made EVA; a non toxic Ethyl Vinyl Acetate mixed with a Calcium Carbonate filler. The material is widely used in the sports, toy and car industry and is tough, UV stable and easy to clean. The material has a memory and when bent or crunched it will go back to its original shape.

Exotic food, is it alive?


Travelling on an Asian flight our chosen dish was moving! It turned out to be Katsuobushi, a preparation of dried, fermented and smoked skipjack tuna, also known as bonito. When the flakes are added as a topping to a hot dish, the steam has the effect of making the flakes move as if dancing; because of this, katsuobushi topping is also known as dancing fish flakes. Its high inosinic acid content is actually very healthy. watch video
