Nederlands Interieur Instituut

During the NII (Dutch interior institute) visit at the Materia Inspiration Centre , the wellknown felt designer Claudy Jongstra showed an impressive collection of felt.

The felt textiles of Claudy Jongstra are unique in their rough sophistication. Some seem to come straight from the back of the beast, others are worked with a finesse that makes them a statement in raw elegance. For Jongstra uses only raw materials - wild silk, linen, camel, cashmere and especially wild wool - which she then felts and treats with original techniques. Jongstra even goes so far as to raise her own sheep in the Dutch countryside and currently has a herd of 200. Felt is her instinctive fabric, one she never tires of reinventing for clients as varied as fashion designers Christian Lacroix, Donna Karan, John Galliano or SO by Alexander van Slobbe, industrial designers Hella Jongerius, Ettore Sottsass and Jasper Morrison “manufactured by Cappellini” and architects Will Bruder and Steven Holl.

In order to keep up-to-date with the latest trends and developments, the "Nederlands interieur instituut, NII" (Dutch interior institute) organises for their members several events throughout the year. The Autumn event of NII with theme Materials, was located at the Inspiration Centre of Materia. By visiting the centre the NII members could gain access to the latest developments within numerous materials. In this inspirational surrounding they were introduced to the latest material novelties. Additional lectures were held by Els Zijlstra, founder of Materia and Claudia Jongstra. Claudia Jongstra explained her particular choice of materials for her designs and presented her designs in an exposition.
