The international platform in the field of materials

Further development: from database to knowledgebase.

June 2007 Materia will be launching its new website. The corporate site www.materia.nl and the materials search engine www.materialexplorer.com will be incorporated in the knowledgebase www.materia.nl. With its knowledgebase, Materia gives architects, interior decorators and designers access to even more extensive material-related information. This means:

• Information on the characteristics of materials.

• Articles on subjects such as trends, innovations, processes, technologies,

  ecological developments and smart materials.

• A diary with dates and locations of all relevant meetings.

• Lectures, workshops and trade fairs for the creative professional.

• The latest books, magazines and articles on materials, technologies,

  architecture and design.

The purpose of all this is to create the worldwide platform in the field of materials. This knowledgebase www.materia.nl is not just for the creative professional. Also manufacturers, who after all are the ones who are constantly being asked to develop new materials, will find the site very helpful. Manufacturers are given a personal log-in code which gives them access to statistical information about the search behaviour of 30,000 creative professionals. In Materia’s philosophy, knowledge concerning trends, developments and the needs of the market is vital for maximising innovative abilities. And with this the future success of materials manufacturers

In the spotlight!

Kaynemaile: New Zealander Kayne Horsham had never even heard of chain mail when he was asked to make the costumes for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. He had to design costumes that looked like authentic chain mail shirts but they could not be very heavy. Once he had worn an existing mail tunic for a half an hour, he rejected it because it weighed 30 kilos and was therefore totally unsuitable for the actors who had to wear it all day and act in complicated scenes.

During a workshop on injection moulded car tyres, Kayne came up with an idea linking this technology and the manufacturing of multiple rings in a complex three-dimensional mesh. Injection moulding is the process in which a thermoset material such as plastic is transformed from a liquid to a solid material through the application of pressure, heating and cooling. Following this workshop he built a Plasticine™ prototype, in collaboration with Agmar Tools. After a great deal of experimentation, the present patented technology was perfected which is now used to make Kaynemaile.

Check this out!

In our continuing quest for exciting materials and techniques, we visited the recent Milan International Furniture Fair. The exhibition halls themselves were full of austere black and white, wood veneers and high-gloss finishes, but out in the city there were still exciting things to be seen.

A compilation from Milan.

Left: Corian® Nouvel Lumières by Jean Nouvel.

Right: The site where the Muon speakers (for audio brand KEF by Ross Lovegrove ) where presented featured a LED-matrix floor that displayed patterns in time to the music. This installation was created by Moving Brands, who also supplied the photos.
