Zand1 and Uni are the names of two paper textiles designed by Dutch designer Marian de Graaff. These textiles can be used for wall and floor hangings, curtains and as decorative elements. The essence of all fabrics by Marian de Graaff is the use of natural materials with natural tones and irregular textures, based on the landscapes of Scandinavia. The textiles are woven from paper yarn with a cotton backing. This results in a fabric that is a bit harder than for instance wool. Furthermore, the paper itself is untreated, thus hygroscopic. Changes in humidity result in the paper fibers expanding or shrinking, which in turn changes the appearance of the whole textile. For maintenance, the textiles can be washed with a machine on 60 degrees Celcius with the addition of natural soap. The textiles have a poor fire-resistance, but they can be coated with a matt transparant coating resulting in a better fire-resistance and chemical resistance.
